| So the weekend provided some decent weather and ample opportunities for some photoes: First - my aunt's 50th over on Stockton meant good views of the harbour and CBD as the sun went down My uncle Ben the Bard Newcastle harbour Main offices of 4 of the biggest companies in town - from L to R NIB (with the flag on the roof, where the wife works), GHD Services, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Sparke Helmore, Hunter Water (just out of frame to the right) An everyday sight - Newcastle is the world's largest coal export port That continues into... and through the night Looking over the grain terminal Got to love clouds at sunset Wish I had brought my tripod - the 50mm was up to the task light-wise (this was at 8:30 at night with no flash) but shutter speed was just a _tiny_ bit too slow for hand-held (and the 50 has no VR). That's my older brother on the left and mother on the right, by the way Looking back over town well after dark - the blue glow to the right of the cathedral is the annual Carols by Candlelight in King Edward Park | |

| Then on Saturday night I had some time to kill to ventured in to the CBD to check out the lights on the old Post Office The lights were switching every couple of minutes, the green and purple outlines actually being drawn out edge by edge Town Hall clock tower, with the "Roundhouse" (Newcastle Council City Admin Centre) Town Hall Lexi parked out the front of NESCA House, aka Newhart Federal Bank from "Superman Returns" Backlit trees in Civic Park The rather ugly and exposed Newcastle Library - for decades shrouded gracefully in Moreton Bay figs, Laman St will never look the same Queen's Wharf, with the Stockton ferry coming in to dock, and a giant green glowing penis (the Queen's Wharf Tower) State Dockyard at Dyke Point | |

| New Year's Eve fireworks - spent them this year down at Newcastle foreshore, they only had the "family-friendly" 9pm fireworks instead of the traditional midnight ones, but any fireworks are better than none Didn't have the greatest vantage point and was shooting hand-held (no room for tripod) so needed fast shutter speed (I tend to prefer those kind of shots over multi-second exposures though), times like this that I wish I had a fixed fast tele instead of relying on my 3.5-5.6 18-200 (was too far away for the nifty 50 to be of much use) as practically all the shots were with the aperture slammed wide open and ISO cranked to make up for it. One of the many harbour tugs putting on a water show I wear my sunglasses at night, so I can, so I can see the light that's right before my eyes A photo of the wife taking a photo of me taking a photo of her Early 'works had a distinct red theme to them. Also, the Moonshadow boat and the Stockton ferry stayed in prime position for most of the show, bastards... Got to love fireworks within other fireworks... The big finale | |

| Went to the Kurri Kurri Nostalgia Festival the other weekend, apart from being a bit too hot for a leather jacket (went 50s Greaser style) the weather was pretty damn good (a nice change from all the rain we've been having lately, and clouds make for much better photography) '59 Chev Belair If it doesn't fit, make it fit Old-skool Citroen H-Van Just taking the family out for a drive... Forget Nissan, THIS is a Skyline(r) - '59 Ford Galaxie 500 Skyliner hardtop convertible How to make the ugly-duckling Anglia look good... Had a big WTF moment when I saw the rear end of this... Studebaker Avanti, less than 6,000 of these were made in an 18-month production run between '62-'63 Model A ute with a Ford Y-block V8, Supercharger and Offenhauser manifold....can't go wrong Still got a bit of playing around to do with my new camera (had to bin quite a few shots over the weekend), it's a bit step-up from the D5100 in terms of adjustability and controlability, a good 2.8/4 walkaround zoom wouldn't hurt either... | |
