Man that's a huge difference. lol I would've just let them rust so I could have an excuse to buy a new set of wheels.

Just finished sanding (by hand grrrhhhh) all 4 rims and gave them all a dose of rust converter. they cleaned up pretty good. My hands are so sore from getting scrathed by the wire brush and corroded from the rust converter lol (i even wore gloves this time). really wish I could have found my drill. I will upload some pics later, im on my way to go pick up some tremclad primer and paint.

If I had the money, I would of just bought new rims and tires but im broke, so have to make due with what ive got lol.

OK, so here is what I did today, well guess it was yesterday now:

I did the other 2 rims but I will make a seperate DIY rusty rims restoration thread and post everything there, rather then flooding my already extensive thread with crappy tire pictures lol

Just bought all my paint (one can tremclad rust converter/primer and 4 cans tremclad gloss black only to find out it is suppose to rain and be cold all week, gonna have to figure out a painting method or use neighbors heated garage. Also gotta paint my lugs and hubcaps.

Oh, I was sure going today, had 3 hours to prep, tape and get my rims ready for the tremclad rust converter and I had just enough tape to do it all. Ill post pics soon, im on my lunch break now. Just wanted to say that it looked like the trmclad rust converter worked good. Then I still have to piant them tomorrow if its nice

Heres some progress on my tires. degreased them again then taped them off to be sprayed with the Tremclad rust reformer (thought it was called converter but its called reformer). It was just under 10 Celsius outside so I prepped everything inside and set up a booth close to the house so I could run the tires bcak in to properly cure. The tremclad rust reformer takes 24 hrs to cure before applying paint.

Here is what I managed to sand the rims down to, still lots of rust there but no flaky or loose rust:



The inner lip was very rusty and difficult to sand

and some of it started to run on me becuase I sprayed really heavy

Aw well, all of this will be hidden by my hubcaps lol

The steelies definitely look a lot better. I've never used rust-converter, seems like it did a pretty good job.

Its rust "reformer" lol. but I also did my rust check rust converter application too, plus this tremclad rust reformer stuff. Gonna attempt paint soon which is also Tremclad rust paint, so I better not see any rust lol.

Transmission is still leaking and paint is chipping off:


I couldn't quite get a pic of it but they got tranny fluid (or something) all over my rear motor mount. plus theres fluid all over my rad fan. Its working great and I think I have actually noticed some improvement in its shifts, but not much if any.

My car is also rusting very badly, my exhaust heat shield is no longer stable, only being held up by 1 bolt I think:



I havnt heard any rattle from the shield yet, but I know its coming.

My car needs rust proofing immediately!

and heres a pic which kind of shows how greasy my rear motor mount is, it wasn't like that before I took it to have the transmission serviced, plus it also shows how much it is rusting on the sub frame

i get my cars under body sprayed with black oil which comes out from my corolla engine.....it sticks and doesnt come off attracts alot of dust which looks bad but under neath the dust there always is a thin coat of oil.....which prevents my corolla undercarriage from rusting...when i did my detailing session car was raised to be washed from under we used diesal to remove previous oil and to apply more.....i was surprised to see that there was no rust what so even on the under carriage.......and when cleaned i could see the company primer on some parts

Ooh your car doesn't look that rusty, but where it is rusting it's pretty bad... Where did you take it to fix the transmission leak before? Perhaps taking it Toyota is the only option. But there's lots of things, even spray cans, of asphalt undercoating and stuff you can buy at Canadian Tire. I used to asphalt undercoating in my wheel wells and it worked like a charm.

And @ Shehroze, I honestly would have never thought of doing it like that to rust proof, sounds like it works really well though.

hahahah its very common here spraying oil and diesel in undercarriages........but i try to get the stickiest blackest oil possible......because my undercarriage is black and it doesnt show...if u noticed some of the detailing pics i posted there are many spots of oil on the floor....those are the excess part...now dust has attracted to the under carriage but oil is present until cleaned by degreaser....it really helps in maintaining under carriage......and its cheap too after all im using the used oil from engine......and its 350pkr for servicing the car from out side inside engine and lifting the car with all four wheels removed and a good undercarriage scrub........

Your right Aaron, the actual floor and frame rails look good, buts its all the exposed metal parts that are rusting badly. Its suppose to be nice weather (well kinda (high of 8-11 C)) for the next couple of days, so I will see if I can fix some spots up and get it more ready for the winter. I definitely want to reinforce my exhaust heat shield lol.

and I went to Mr Transmission to have it serviced. I actually never even considered taking it to the Toyota dealership thinking there prices would be sky high, but it would probably of been worth it.

Ive heard many people swear by using oil as there rust proof. Theres a service here locally called Rust Check that rust proofs your car using oil for like $150 max. I was actually going to do this and had booked an appointment last year, but my friend told me they drill holes in your doors and all over to spray in oil internally. So I cancelled that appointment. Im sure it works great at slowing rust, but I wouldn't be able to deal with all the dirt and dust stuck to everything.

I would much rather use the asphalt rubber based undercoating for a cleaner look and better sound proofing.

wooh 150$$$$.....then asphalt it is i dont mind dust by the way because i get my cars under carrige washed every month along with full service

I actually went to Rust Check (a local business) and asked for an asphalt based undercoating and he said no one does that anymore. he couldn't even refer me to another shop. He actually told me if I want asphalt as an undercoating I would have to go to Canadiantire and do it myself. They only use the oil

Is that so? Maybe go with the oil then? I'd hate that while working under my car though... haha, or just Canadian Tire it up.

Thanks, it was so foggy out. It was still foggy till about 10 am. I was a little hesitant and scared to pull out on that highway, couldn't see further then 30 meters and I dont exactly have the best acceleration lol.
