corolla rear disc brake coversion - Page 2 Empty
PostSubject: Re: corolla rear disc brake coversion     corolla rear disc brake coversion - Page 2 EmptySat Aug 31, 2013 3:59 pm

Just a heads up about the brake proportioning valve guys - I went to change mine to one from a SuperStrut/ABS model today but upon installing the new one I noticed that it was lacking one hole/port for one of my brake lines, so I was unable to use it. It's almost identical in design to my original proportioning valve except one of the ports is just blank, therefore rendering it completely incompatible. So be aware that if you use a valve from a model with ABS brakes and your Corolla has non-ABS brakes then you may run into the same problem that I did today. I'm now going to source one from a non-ABS AE101 Levin GT Apex.

Also another quick heads up - Be very cautious if you plan on buying Goodridge braided brake lines for the AE101. The front lines are fine but the rear lines are for drum brake models only as they were designed for the US market. I also figured this out the hard way today, so now have to order a different brand of lines. Today wasn't a good day for brakes for me.....laugh

Here's some photos that I took when I had both proportioning valves side by side. The SuperStrut/ABS one is on the right and you can see by the pink mark where the extra brake line port is on the original non-ABS proportioning valve:

Yeah you can use your old (current) valve. The brakes will work without any problems whatsoever. Not sure how much a non-ABS proportioning valve is because it depends on how much the wrecker will charge you. I plan on getting mine from an early Levin GT Apex or Corolla FX-GT.

Yes that's what I've been doing for months. You don't NEED to swap the valve, but it wouldn't hurt to just for peace of mind. Braking performance may be exactly the same regardless of which valve you have installed, however they have different part numbers for a reason, so for me it's peace of mind knowing that I'm getting the optimum performance from my brake set-up by having the correct valve installed Wink

mmm, i'd like to point something out here.

a proportionning valve should be designed for a specific braking system and body style. if you take a prop valve from a car that has smaller front brakes that yours right now it may not be better than with the stock valve. also if you have lets say a wagon prop valve on your sedan, weight distribution is different and it may not be better too.

i'm just saying that from an engineering point of view, i dont know how optimised the corolla braking system was and if there was really that much different prop valves. but i'm personnally thinking about putting an adjustable one on my car when i upgrade my brakes.

The drum brake and disc brake lines are different, so it's important to get the rear hoses at the same time. The hoses are only very short however, just from under the guard/fender to the caliper. The actual hard brake lines that run under the car are the same. The reason the disc brake lines are different is because they don't run through the tab on the strut like the drum brake lines do. They have more of a direct connection and are therefore shorter. When getting the disc brakes off another car just disconnect the brake line under the fender. This way you'll not only stop brake fluid going everywhere when you drive home with them in the back of your car but you also won't have the exposed hole in the caliper for any dirt to get into while in storage.

Yes the AE101/AE111 lines are the same. Those are the exact same braided lines that I'm using.

EE101 models have rear drum brakes so I'd be very cautious if they're advertised as being for one of those (especially since it says the image above is for reference only). I bought some Goodridge lines originally and when they arrived it turned out they were for drum brake models, so I had to send them back. In the end I got the Safebrake lines, and they've been great.

The rear drum brake lines from under the fender are longer than the disc brake lines since on the drum brake models the lines go through the rear struts, whereas on the disc brake models they don't. Everything else is identical aside from that one length of brake line.

Yeah sure:

The part number is TOY-19. Yes the twin pot BZ-R calipers fit. That's what I'm using (as seen in one of the photos above).

Correct Approve!. When I placed my order for the brake lines I requested that the heat shrink wasn't set in place during production so that I could position the brake line where I wanted it and shrink it with a heat gun when I was happy. The reason for this is because on the twin pot front calipers the brake port is in the centre, whereas on the single pot standard calipers it's off to one side. So bear that in mind when placing your order too if you plan on using twin pot front calipers. All you have to do with the heat shrink is use a heat gun to melt the wrap when you're happy with where brake line is positioned through the mounting point on the strut.

Yes, if you want to use the 275mm large discs like I'm using then you'll need to use the Celica ST202 (3S-GE) carrier brackets. Otherwise you can just use the twin pot calipers on your standard brake discs.

would bzr levin carrier bracket line up and fit my ae101 stub perfect??

i think i can get standard levin disc drill and groved here but i will look into 275mm which better 275mm or stock disc?

i dnt no if celica ST202 (3S-GE) carrier brakets get got here to handy... and they line up and fit perfect on ae101 stub?

and requesting the shrink wramp not to be shrunk is only on front lines?

If you want to use the Levin BZ-R carrier brackets you'll have to grind down the outer edge so that it sits against the hub properly and allows the holes to line up. You'll also have to get your discs machined down to 260mm or use factory 258mm discs.

The ST202 Celica carrier brackets on the other hand already have the outer edge ground down and sit up against the hub perfectly. They are also a bit higher so you can use the original 275mm BZ-R discs. The 275's are thicker, so not only do you get a larger braking area due to the disc size but they also dissipate heat faster. I bought my BZ-R 275mm discs brand new from the dealership, but aftermarket non-Toyota branded ones are available. The late model Toyota Corolla T-Sport uses the same size disc with the same stud pattern and centre bore. I have a pair of the ST202 carrier brackets sitting here right now if you're interested Smile

As for the shrink wrap - Yep, only on the front lines Approve!

The price of the carrier brackets is $120 NZD (€73) + shipping. I'd have to check the exact shipping price, but it would be about $75 NZD (€45) on International Air (3-10 working days) since they're quite heavy. Yes, they line up with the hub perfectly. I'll post the photos at the end of those post comparing the different between the standard AE101/AE111 twinpot brackets and the ST202 brackets.

Discs in the rear are 266mm Approve!

Yep, those are the BZ-R calipers shown in the photo. One with the original Levin carrier bracket and one with the ST202 carrier bracket.

No worries man, holding them for a couple of days won't be a problem Cool

All of the McPherson strut Corolla's have the exact same set-up, so these will definitely fit on yours Approve!. Correct, standard discs in the rear.
