going from 5afe to 4afe Empty
PostSubject: going from 5afe to 4afe   going from 5afe to 4afe EmptyFri Apr 26, 2013 10:34 pm

hey all, just got myself a 5afe ae100 wagon with a whole heap of k's on the engine (328,000) and no signs of any recent cambelt changes etc, it runs fine for now though Smile

Anyway I'm looking to swap in a 4AFE soon enough (would love to go 4age, and will if can find one cheap enough but 4afe's are cheap as chips here) and have a few questions.

Is it really straight forward? will I need many parts from donor car? or can I use some misc items from my 5afe? sorry if that doesn't make sense, basically if I get an engine and its missing some hoses etc can some parts be used from my old engine? how about ECU etc?

thanks in advance!

Get a donnor as it will have everything you need, going from a 5a to 4a is simple enough but you will need the 4a mounts, hoses, looms and ECU, which will be the same for a 4age, personally I'd wait for the 4age, its much more fun trust me Twisted Evil

Pretty well as easy to fit a 4age as it is a 4afe, from what I've read. But Magweal has done it so I'll leave it to him to answer that.

I'm still running the stock 4afe pump with no issues, I don't see a problem with yours working.
Toyota over engineer their parts lol!

you already answered the question in your thread.... its 6200 rpm. redline is 6000 rpm.

ah thread starter..... yours is a 5AFE right?
The color of your injectors are either yellow or grey, correct?

You want more power with no engine change and at the very most, ecu adaptor and 7AFE fuel injectors?

The idea that I had actually came from this link: 4AFE engine with 3SFE ecu

I already did this to my engine.... I loved the result... And I also have a Frankenstein engine:

5A first gen block
7AFE 2nd gen head, intake, injectors
7AFE 4 t0 1 OEM tubular headers
5AFE 2nd gen manual harness
3SFE ecu
4AFE distributor
ecu adaptor

basically I first DIYed my own upgrade from a carb 5AF to a frankenstein EFI project, then I changed ecu midway because I did not like the performance of the 5AFE that I got.... So I exchanged and I was mistakenly given a 3SFE ecu.... well, it was not a mistake, I really do like the results that I got afterwards.

lots of power and torque at useable rpms.... like its a 3SFE but better.

But, it is a DIY of course...... However if you have a pick-a-part there or live close to one, it should be no problem converting the 5AFE ecu to 3SFE ecu....

To what extent was your performance improved, especially accelaration and horse power?

going from 5afe to 4afe Empty
PostSubject: Re: going from 5afe to 4afe   going from 5afe to 4afe EmptyWed Mar 15, 2017 10:26 pm

that was a few months ago..... I had to do an engine change recently and I got a 2nd gen 4AFE from a 1995 toyota corona Exsior GXi 1.6... you heard it right.... I googled the ecu and it came from a 1.6 Corona Exsior GXi..... same 2nd gen engine, same everything...

The reason is the 5AF block that I have have waaaaaaaaaaaay too low compression so I had to decide to whether have this engine overhauled OR get myself a new block instead.

The first problem was that the exhaust has an oily film to it... then the low compression of the engine affects acceleration from 2K to 4K rpm.... and finally the fuel consumption is high.

the compression that I measured are as follows: 115-80-120-120 (from 1st to 4th cyl)

The cost for having it overhauled here in the Philippines is a bit more expensive than buying a surplus engine.... and I am still not sure of the quality of the machining that was done... thirdly is the reassembly that most mechanics do here.... way too many shortcuts for the average mechanic here and the ones that know about Toyota engine are quite expensive.... so I decided to get myself a 2nd gen 4AFE instead.... made in japan and sealed (assembled) in Japan...

now, I can feel the difference in power when I accelerate.... the engine is a 4AFE but using the 3SFE ecu (I was lucky they were the same gen) it runs very fine and accelerates quite fast although I have not been able to use it for long but the engine idles very smooth, the same with acceleration, you hardly need to step on the gas pedal to make it go.
