Help !! Knocking noise from silver top 20 valve engine

Hello
I have a AE101 with 20V silver top engine........

It has started making knocking noise which sounds pretty serious I have heard that they suffer from VVT pulley problems so replaced it with another used one and this seemed to make no difference.
I have powered the Oil Control Valve with the plug and and that didnt make any real difference either.

So I'm guessing the sump is coming off next unless anyone has any better ideas or knows what fails first in these engines ?

whats the oil like? when was it last changed?
