New Project

Hi All,

I'm just starting a new project here in the UK on a '97 ae101 that I've acquired. Haven't spent much time on corollas but slowly falling for them.

Currently have a stock shell from a 1.3 hatchback and planning on building a road car that'll hold its own on the odd track day. Intention is to get a 1.6 4AGE (or 7AGE) block and pair it with a 20V silvertop head, give it a 1st stage port and polish, retain the stock drivetrain from the clutch to the wheels, maybe find a 6 speed gearbox at a later date.

Other bits:
Exhaust: Design and fab custom 4:2:1 straight through
Intake:Undecided
Brakes: Rear discs on the back wheels (I read that there's a bolt on conversion from E11 rear assembly straight off the spindle?) but keep the current 160mm discs on front
Suspension: Coilovers - haven't researched yet.
Electronics: Obviously a new loom is required and was thinking about an aftermarket programmable ecu - would quite like to get into the programming.
Interior: remove everything behind the front seats. possibly cut and fit a 8mm mdf board for the rear to provide a flat surface as a nice bit boot.
Exterior: Leave stock maybe privacy glass

I'm just curious to know whether anyone has done something similar? Any knowledge, advice, shortcuts or experience would be more than welcome.

Me and several others on this forum have done 1 or some or all of these mods. If you do a search, I'm sure you will find plenty of information regarding the plans you have for it.

Me personally, I did the 20V BT swap with a 6 speed from a Matrix XRS. I have D2 coilovers on mine but there are some other brands out there to choose from. Still haven't upgraded the exhaust or ECU but I am running open ITB's. Good luck with it and post some pics of the car when you get a chance.

Some info to help -

1.3 4E-FE gearbox will not mate to 4A/7A block as bellhousing section is different.

Get a complete Silvertop with gearbox, ecu & loom if possible, the only issue will be the wireing.

Late spec 4AG 16v block has oil squirters like the Silvertop and Blacktop. 7AFE block does not have these. You will need 20v pistons.

Early 4AG 16v block has 18mm gudgeon pins and 20v pistons need 20mm pins.

Rear disc brakes can be got from 1.8GXI's or Levins.
