Cold Air Intake Empty
PostSubject: Cold Air Intake   Cold Air Intake EmptyThu Jul 09, 2015 5:52 pm

Hi guys,

I was wondering what the best way to fit a cold air intake to a 7afe? I have looked around the engine bay and the only way to make it work is to go around the engine and down next to the headers, which kind of defeats the purpose...

My other option is to relocate everything (battery, engine coolant bottle etc) but I really don't want to do that. Like if it comes to that then I'm probably not going to do it.

Or should I just fit a short ram intake instead? I definitely don't want to keep the factory setup though.

Cheers guys  Very Happy

(P.S. Im in Australia so I need to have some sort of a box around the filter by law. min 3 sides around the box Sad if that makes a difference)

Depending on what state you are in (and how pedantic you are) you can get away with an exposed pod filter as long as it's not in the engine bay itself - mine is mounted between the bumper and the passenger wheel inside the front guard where the old intake resonator used to sit, there's a hole through the guard just behind the battery that the resonator connects to the intake snorkel just before the airbox (obviously the snorkel and airbox have been removed in my case Razz). Angle it right and you only need a single bend in an alloy pipe from the vertially-mounted pod to the existing rubber elbow coming off the throttle body.

Cold Air Intake Empty
PostSubject: Re: Cold Air Intake   Cold Air Intake EmptyFri Jul 10, 2015 5:21 pm

Thanks for this. it does help. I'm in NSW by the way. Did you have a sensor going into the factory air box? I think that's what it is. its a black plug with a wire running off it going into the bottom part of the of the factory airbox. What should I do about that?

Also, do you ever get water getting into the filter in that location? and could I also change that rubber hose off the throttle body into one of those blue air hoses (like the ones used for inter cooler piping) Cause I would really like to get rid of that black plastic box (probably a resonator or restrictor) coming off the rubber tube towards the firewall.

Thanks heaps by the way Smile

The sensor is the intake air temp sensor, my intake pipe has a hole in it with a bung for the sensor to plug in to (you can see it in the third and fourth picture

Never had a problem with water getting sucked into the engine, and I've driven through some pretty big puddles. It is mostly protected by the guard so you basically have to be stationary in a puddle half a metre deep (the filter will only suck in water once it is completely submerged, otherwise it will just pull in air from above the waterline) in which case you've probably screwed the car anyway.
