PostSubject: Re: Corolla BEAMS conversion   Corolla BEAMS conversion - Page 8 EmptySat Oct 01, 2011 11:39 am

A lad on CelicaIreland.com was asking if the engine would need to come forward or back using the RAV4 mount. So i had a look and in theory this is what i think!!

"Was just looking there at a photo of the corolla engine on page 1 of this thread (19th picture from the bottom). It shows the timing belt side of the engine. If you look where the mount is bolted to the engine, and where the mount bolts, bolt to the chassi. The mount bolts that bolt to the chassi, look like they might line up to where the beams engine accepts the rav4 mount! in other words, the corolla mount is designed in a way that the engine mount holes that allow the mount to bolt to the chassi, are not in line with where the mount bolts to the engine, but the rav4 mount is designed where the beams engine accepts the mount in a different location (gees, sounds like some weird porn!!) basically, it looks like the engine wont need to come forward or go back is what im saying. See picture of the beams engine with the mount on it and where the mount fits, and compare it to the corolla engine. Actually, feck it, here are both pics haha"

Corolla BEAMS conversion - Page 8 Empty
PostSubject: Re: Corolla BEAMS conversion   Corolla BEAMS conversion - Page 8 EmptyThu Oct 27, 2011 10:25 am

Its taking a lot longer than i thought, but a good learning experience. i was determined to get the engine out of the car last week without a crane, so i literally wrestled with the thing until i got it away from the chassi and sitting on a crate in the engine bay! when i get the clutch kit for the beams, i can hire a crane and get the old engine out and the beams fitted in a day!! il post photos of the whole lot then. Just need to get a few more small things from the scrap yard. The metal piece for the avensis gearbox mount that bolts between the mount and the gear box. i had it but cant for the life of me remember where i put it!, and also a small piece of the driverside drive shaft bracket, then everythings good to go. Il fit all the parts and if all going well, all thats left is the exhaust, brakes and wiring, then after that i can add all the toys i want!! Wink

Corolla BEAMS conversion - Page 8 Empty
PostSubject: Re: Corolla BEAMS conversion   Corolla BEAMS conversion - Page 8 EmptySat Oct 29, 2011 10:23 am

Some updates of some work i did a few weeks ago Wink

Wanted to get the engine prepared to be taken out of the engine bay. As i haven't the use of an engine crane, i used 2 car jacks, a car stand, crow bar and my two arms to get it away from the chassi!! I was going to try and raise the car up over the engine, but after getting the engine free from the chassi, the car would have had to have been raised about 5 feet to get the engine out, because of the corollas lower front bar, and as im doing this in my driveway, i didn't want to risk any accidents!! So, heres the work so far.

First, the tools!
Corolla BEAMS conversion - Page 8 P1060927

The culprit!!
Corolla BEAMS conversion - Page 8 P1060928

I took some pictures of the fuels lines to and from the charcoal swirly pot and the intake, just so i know where everything goes.
Corolla BEAMS conversion - Page 8 P1060929
Corolla BEAMS conversion - Page 8 P1060930
Corolla BEAMS conversion - Page 8 P1060931
Corolla BEAMS conversion - Page 8 P1060932

Me, pointing at stuff!!
Corolla BEAMS conversion - Page 8 P1060933
More pointing.
Corolla BEAMS conversion - Page 8 P1060934

After market fuel pressure regulator on the right there.
Corolla BEAMS conversion - Page 8 P1060935

Unscrewed line from swirly pot to injectors.

Unscrewed fuel pressure regulator from chassi.
Corolla BEAMS conversion - Page 8 P1060938

Unplugged fuel line from regulator.
Corolla BEAMS conversion - Page 8 P1060939

Then started to take the rear engine mount bolts off. I had these already loosened so just a few turns to get them off.
Corolla BEAMS conversion - Page 8 P1060940
Corolla BEAMS conversion - Page 8 P1060941

View from underneath the car out of the bonnet. Nice day :Very Happy:
Corolla BEAMS conversion - Page 8 P1060942

Nuts are off the rear engine mount. Photographed them for size reference.
Corolla BEAMS conversion - Page 8 P1060943
Corolla BEAMS conversion - Page 8 P1060944

Used long torque wrench to unloosen the front engine cradle from the chassi. IMPORTANT TO NOTE!! The left gearbox side engine mount and the right timing belt side engine mounts are still bolted to the chassi and engine, and the bolts from the engine mount are still inside the metal of the cross member (2 of them) with one bolt aslo holding the engine cradle in place (four pictures up!)
Corolla BEAMS conversion - Page 8 P1060945

14mm socket used.
Corolla BEAMS conversion - Page 8 P1060946

Engine cradle just drops down.
Corolla BEAMS conversion - Page 8 P1060947

It is still being held in by the 3rd bolt on the rear engine mount tho. This is what starts causing problems getting the engine free (as i found after a lot of f'ing and blinding and basically throwing a few tantrums in the middle of the drive way in front of the neighbours!! ahem...) because, IMPORTANT TO NOTE!! the engine has to be lifted for it to pop out, and it cant be lifted up until the gearbox side mount is unbolted, this is where an engine crane comes in handy!! or, as i did, the use of carefully placed car jacks!! I managed to wiggle it out using carefully placed pieces of wood, wrestling techniques, and down right super powers!! Wink

Also to, the engine had to be raised with jacks after unbolting the gearbox side mount, and lowered on the timing belt side slightly after unbolting the timing belt side mount, so that the engine was at a slight angle so it could be wiggled and pryed out. The reason for this is that if you try to just raise the engine up and pop the rear engine mount bolt out of the cross member, the engine mount hits off the steering racks that goes toward the passenger side wheel!! Found this out after asking "WHAT THE F%&K" about 3 times!! confused So your beggining to see what kind of day i had haha. I'm sure someone is asking..."why didn't you just unbolt the mount from the gearbox". Good question! I couldn't because (A), one of the nuts is worn, and (B) there was no space to fit the socket wrenches in to get at them, and also the spanners were just feck'n useless!! i could have also just unbolted the gearbox and dealt with it in two pieces, but again had issues trying to get at bolts!
here are the photo's. I'll explain as i go...
By the way, i had to get the engine cradle out so i could drop the engine down.

picture under the car of the rear engine mount. You can see where the 3rd bolt is holding the engine cradle in place
Corolla BEAMS conversion - Page 8 P1060948

Jacking up the engine to hold it in place as i unbolt the gearbox side engine mount (pre-loosened on the chassi (the bolt that goes sideways through the rubber mount), but still bolted tight to the gearbox)
Corolla BEAMS conversion - Page 8 P1060949

Taking out the side bolt. Saying a little prayer that i don't get my fingers caught!! 😠
Corolla BEAMS conversion - Page 8 P1060951

Unbolting the gearbox side engine mount bracket from the gearbox.
Corolla BEAMS conversion - Page 8 P1060952

Using a second jack to balance the front of the engine as i could feel the weight tilting forward
Corolla BEAMS conversion - Page 8 P1060953

Mount comes off.
Corolla BEAMS conversion - Page 8 P1060954

After raising the engine with the jacks and trying to pry the rear mount bolt from the cross member and engine cradle, i found that i needed just a bit more space to get it free so i took off the gearbox engine mount bracket bolted to the gearbox (under the mount) When that didn't work, i lost the plot a bit!! :banging:
Corolla BEAMS conversion - Page 8 P1060957
Corolla BEAMS conversion - Page 8 P1060955

Jacked up the driver side of the engine to unbolt the timing belt side engine mount.
Corolla BEAMS conversion - Page 8 P1060956

Started unscrewing from underneath the mount.
Corolla BEAMS conversion - Page 8 P1060958

After unscrewing a couple of smaller nuts on top, the engine came free from the mount.
Corolla BEAMS conversion - Page 8 P1060959

I then lowered the engine on the driver side so its tilted to one side, so i could start getting the rear engine mount bolt free from the engine cradle and cross member.
Corolla BEAMS conversion - Page 8 P1060960

This is a picture looking down on the rear engine mount behind the gearbox. You can see just above the mount, it is being stopped by the steering rack that goes to the passenger wheel. This was a complete pain in my arse for at least 20 minutes!! you can also see where the mount is bolted to the gearbox, the top bolt is worn and there's no space to get the socket wrench in their!! This is all very important information as it will help future nutters to avoid heart attacks and serious angry outbursts hahaha.
Corolla BEAMS conversion - Page 8 P1060961

Then i had the bright idea of leaving the engine raised and lowering the car more so maybe the bolt would come free from the cross member and engine cradle.
Corolla BEAMS conversion - Page 8 P1060963
Corolla BEAMS conversion - Page 8 P1060962

But then i had the same trouble with the mount being stopped by the steering rack. Tantrum number 3!! :crying: So then i decided, enough mess'n about and used the crow bar to wedge the bolt out a bit, a piece of wood to jam in between the mount and the crossmember, and my arms to wiggle the shit out of the engine until...Eureka, the engine came free!!! :Very Happy:
Corolla BEAMS conversion - Page 8 P1060964

Out comes the engine cradle...
Corolla BEAMS conversion - Page 8 P1060966

And the engine drops to a pallet underneath!!
Corolla BEAMS conversion - Page 8 P1060965

I then sat down and stared at it for about 15 minutes with a big stupid grin on my puss!!
I called it a day after figuring out it might be a little dodgy to raise the car up so high to drag the engine out, but its now away from the chassi and ready to be lifted out come BEAMS fitting day!! :thum:
Corolla BEAMS conversion - Page 8 P1060967

A few weeks ago, i filled the cylinders of the BEAMS with WD40 and some anti rust oil and its been sitting in there to a good while, so going to unseize it when it gets fitted. my mate noel has done this plenty of times so i think il leave that job to him!
Corolla BEAMS conversion - Page 8 P1060821

And finally, Today my clutch kit arrived, so il be putting that on over the weekend :Very Happy:
Corolla BEAMS conversion - Page 8 P1070023

Thats all for now. More updates soon, Hopefully the next photo's youl see will be the BEAMS engine in the Corolla engine bay!
