| I stopped by the garage today too see how hard it would be too fit a set of loweringsprings and the mechanic told me that it would easily cost £1100 with parts and labour, then after he had taken a look at my car he told me that it looked like my car had been in an accident at some point in its life and he could fix it but he told me it would be cheaper for me too buy another car and send the corolla too the junkyard...
I'm so !"#¤%&/( mad right now!!
What should I do? /end rant

| 1100 to fit lowering springs????
your mechanic sounds like he's ripping you off big time!!
is that him buying the lowering springs and new shocks or are you using your old shocks and buying your own springs?
you could do it yourself with some spanners and rachet with a few sockets, biggest job is swappin the springs
as for it being hit before, if the car is driving straight and doesnt have much rattles i wouldnt worry about it almost all of these old cars had a tip at some point
does your country have a test for checking the cars road worthiness? if it passes that every year then the damage isnt bad

| The price I got was with him doing the work, he also told me that it would take about 2 hours too change the front springs and 6-7 hours too change the back ones.
I am going too use the old shocks until I can afford new ones, I do want too try and fit the lowering springs on my own but I dont have any mechanical skills.
The car is driving perfectly but its the visible damage that keeps me worried, my country does have a road worthiness test that cars have too pass every 2 years and mine is due in 03.2014, if it passes I'll be happy if not then I will have too fix the things that need fixing (and my "wishlist" keeps growing almost every day).

| Thanks miib, all I want is a car I can depend on for a few more years and that does not look like every other stock corolla e10 where I live.. I have so many plans for my car in the end it would be cheaper too buy a brand new Corolla | |

| it sounds like he is taking you for a ride it takes about 3h to fit 4x lowering springs if you get a set of spring compresers you can do it your self just take the shocks out compress the old spring undo the top bolt swap the spring and refit thats all it takes:D | |

| Im sure I can, right now I'm getting tired of waiting for the springs so hopefully they should be here in a few days, I am also waiting for some red extended steel lugnuts, they would look good on my car, then the wheels I put on my car will be powdercoated or plastidipped this winter.
The only type of bodykit I want is the Booster front lip and a spoiler thingy on the back with a brakelight.

| Sounds like your mechanic is just ripping you off. I've replaced springs on a truck (I imagine it wouldn't be that different from a car, except that we had to held rear shock mounts on) and it wasn't that hard, for $1100 he is just taking you for a ride. Plenty of dudes on here have done it, even if you're not mechanically inclined. Just take a day off and you'll get er done. Any questions and there's almost always someone here. | |

| I will pickup my loweringsprings next week, they are at the postoffice now but I dont get paid until next week, and I dont work that much because I have had lots of problems with my back (I was in an accident in 2005 and have had problems with my back since then) so I'm on disability pay, but I work part-time as a grounds keeper.
After all, how hard can it be too replace 4 springs right?

| it's actually a LOT easier to install coilovers. I'll never do springs again lol.
It's possible that he just doesn't want to do it, so he jacks up the price to steer you away.

| I'm gonna see how my car is too drive with stock shocks and loweringsprings and if I go for coilovers I will wait until after my cars MOT too buy and fit them, I'm also thinking about leaving the bodywork as it is and spend money where it matters. | |

If you've got spring compressors then doing springs/struts is barely any harder than full coilovers...

| I'm gonna try and get the loweringsprings tomorrow, they wont lower my car that much, only 30/30mm but that is enough as I'm still gonna use the stock shocks, I also hope I get the windows tinted soon.. | |

If you've got spring compressors then doing springs/struts is barely any harder than full coilovers... I'm not sure which spring compressors you use, but the ones I rent from the parts store are a huge pain to use. Actually, suspension was a piece of cake on the AE101 because of it's simple suspension design layout, but the IS300 was a nightmare to fit springs, no room for the spring compressors. Coilovers are 100 million times easier because they are already compressed for you, one package piece.

| It really all depends on the spring rates. | |
