Fair enough. Googlewards we go then! xD

EDIT: Turns out I like OEM too much. xD I think I'll be looking to have my front lip repaired alongside the sideskirts. xD So when it's all complete it'll be a completely factory exterior except bonnet. :O And I need to get my hands on one of those top spoilers too when the time comes. Twisted Evil

Well, I got my letter from Vector today stating that they would be in contact with me again in a little while to invoice me for the repairs to the junction box located at 228 Orakei Road, Remuera. xD

PostSubject: Re: Jay's 93 FX GT   Jay's 93 FX GT - Page 4 EmptyWed Jun 26, 2013 12:54 am

Not that I wanna show in current condition hahaha. xD
Really disappointed with the panelbeater, truth be told. Probably going to just have this fender colour-matched and touch up paint to the dent in the back for now, then when I can afford to go nuts and get it all back nice and shiny I'll replace the fender (again) and all the headlights with nice clear BZ touring ones, and probably try get clear corner lights too. On that note too, I've noticed something I absolutely detest about carbon fibre hoods. The pins. The goddamn pins. They ruin the whole aesthetic of the hood for me. xD Soooo I guess I'll try find an aftermarket one with a nice subtle scoop that I can maybe get a mesh inlay added to that won't need pins going through it.

The reason for replacing the fender again is that upon closer inspection, there's been a couple of tags cut out of it and it's got what appear to be combination plier wounds where it was bent a bit to make the headlight fit properly. >.< Oh yeah, and did I mention earlier they also broke off the mounting point that you get to by opening the door? xD And there's a snapped bolt in the bottom I have to find a way to drill out so I can actually fit this fender properly (right now it makes a loud crack where it's jamming against the door as I open it)

It'll take time to get her how I want her, but she's worth it. xD

For sure. Smile It looks worse in person than in the picture imo. xD There's a big dent above the rear wheel arch. It's fine, it'll just take time. And I'm really looking forward to when I get the money together for it. I'm going to be pooling parts and money for a while then get all the bodywork I want done in one hit.

I have a motto in life. Do it once, do it right.

A nicer black when finished. It'll be colourmatched back to the original temporarily though.

When I get it into a shop for all the body work it'll be going to Crystal Black Silica.

You don't have to use bonnet pins, I had to use them on mine because they were already there.

Okay, so, here's the plan - just waiting on funding. xD

OEM Bonnet with an impreza scoop added, since you said it's easy to add scoops to bonnets, Jamie.
It's going to have a mesh inlay because I think those look good, and keep the bugs out yo.

Mesh grill to replace the stock FX one. The big gap in the FX bumper where the number plate sits will also be getting a mesh inlay.

Top Spoiler, FX GT skirts and lip, have the entire body tidied up so there's no dents anywhere. Rust check and repair as necessary/if necessary, underseal, leak check and seal, sound deadening, respray Crystal Black Silica, and all professionally aligned. Wanting to see if I can have the interior of the boot where the spare wheel sits covered with a metal lid, so to speak, instead of the chipboard one that's in there right now. Will of course be mounted to the body, and carpet overlaid, with a trap-door that opens up to access the spare wheel.

Black headlights and corner lights, replace fog light bulbs, replace tail lights - possibly LED.

After all of that is achieved, engine rebuild time, then figure out where I want to go with the interior and sounds.

Once interior and sounds are sorted, I'll be pooling my money again while I secure the parts to overhaul the suspension, brakes, and all handling components all at once, along with dropping in a 1mz-fe and a c60 if the two marry up okay. If not, will search for another gearbox option.

I anticipate that taking a while, so I'll probably pick up a cheap shit run-around to use for work while I carry out the engine conversion and all the rest, when I get to it.

I'm going to temporarily close this, so don't expect anything big from me for the next while. I'll still be here and around, but am planning out something BIG with Jamie and Tom, so stay tuned. Once we nut it all out and get the ball rolling, I'll reopen this officially.

For now, all plans are scrapped while a definitive outline and game plan is created.

PS: No answers as to the plan shall be given due to it's current volatile nature. Ask no questions get told no lies. Wink

PostSubject: Re: Jay's 93 FX GT   Jay's 93 FX GT - Page 4 EmptyWed Jul 17, 2013 4:03 pm

Okay, so here's the deal - I wanted to put a 2gr-fe into the rolla, but have since realised how unrealistic that is for me due to the complication of such a swap and my lack of know how and ability. Due to the many fabrication complications that would arise, I've placed it in the too hard basket.

Sadly, my main goal was to raise the power/weight ratio of the car dramatically while retaining the cornering ability, and preserving much of the weight balance. As such, 3sge was out of the question, and 1mz-fe just doesn't really get my blood pumping on a FWD platform such as the AE101.

I love the car too much to just bin it and as such intend to fix it back up to a relatively presentable state and sell it off or put in an Auto transmission in it for a friend to have as his car is dying slowly but surely, and I know it would find a good home with him.

This brings me to my next point - I want something toyota, small, hatchback, and RWD. I also love the look of old, vintage automobiles, and so I have fallen in love with the starlet KP60/61 and intend to get my hands on one.

But that will be a while down the line as I save up funds to do what I want to it. It'll be a project car while I fix up the rolla's body a little, and make sure it's mechanically sound.

For now, I'm gonna see where life takes me, and remain on this forum with all you lovely people getting to know you better.

I know we all had high hopes for it, not least of all me, but I'm just not feeling the enthusiasm for doing up a FWD that I used to. And so, it's time for me to settle back, take life as it comes, and see how I'm feeling in a year or so, once I am financially able to tackle a project.

PostSubject: Re: Jay's 93 FX GT   Jay's 93 FX GT - Page 4 EmptyWed Jul 17, 2013 6:54 pm

Hmmmm. The biggest appeal in the KP60 for me is it's a hatchback, and weighs only 700kg stock.

I'm putting everything on hold anyway, and will be contemplating it over the next year or so while I wait and see if a good deal comes up.

You know I'm always open to ideas and suggestions. ^^

Edit: That being said, some quick googling, and the TE37 is mighty fine indeed.....

Second Edit: Curses, just when I think I have a plan, you throw a spanner in the works, Jamie. Razz Now I'll be waiting for either a TE37 Levin, or a KE35 Corolla to show up at the right price in the right condition, and then turning it into a project car until it has a 3sge Beams from an altezza. After that I'll find the GTFX a new home somewhere it'll be loved and looked after. If you and Tom want to help once I get all the parts together and the funds of course, let me know, I'm always keen for a hand from those that know more than I.

I will of course, come up with a definitive parts list, as well as spend every day researching it until I'm 100% certain I can do it, and until I have all the parts to do it.

I hate you but I love you.... Thanks for putting me onto something better than a KP60 xD

Also, I guess this thread can be closed as a "Nothing ever happened to it" waste of time thread, and if/when I get my hands on the ke35/te37 I'll open a build thread in the Other Rides section. Embarassed  Crying or Very sad

your car is looking great, coming along really nice, slowly but steady.

to bad to hear the change of plans, but its for a RWD so that is great! i havnt driven my corolla hard yet, but i already miss the RWD action of the beemer (and yes you notice the diference in normal driving, in one the engine pulls you and in the other it pushes you, the power delivery is different), but the car that give me the rwd bug it was a KE70, lovely car, and shares many things with the migthy AE86

Jay's 93 FX GT - Page 4 Empty
PostSubject: Re: Jay's 93 FX GT   Jay's 93 FX GT - Page 4 EmptyThu Jul 18, 2013 7:16 am

The biggest difference between RWD and FWD is the ability to manipulate traction.

In a FWD both the power output and the steering all go to the same wheels, and as such it's harder to manipulate the traction as a simple formula for traction is the amount of force being applied to the wheels vs the grip of the tyres. Once it's lost in a FWD it's a lot harder to regain and control, which is why it was never a favourable drift platform.

In a RWD you can freely manipulate the slide of the wheels without worry as much about still being able to point the car, since the front wheels stay nice and planted, with all the power going to the back, allowing you to increase or decrease throttle to decrease or increase traction from the back of the car.

In a RWD it is possible to "power out" of a slide in order to avoid a spill off the side of the road, whereas in a FWD the reverse is true - apply more power = more trouble because your steering goes through the same wheels you've now caused to start sliding.

Of course, feel free to correct me on anything in the above post I've stated that is wrong, since there are so many people out there that are both more skilled and more knowledgeable drivers than myself, and I would hate to mislead people.

The above is of course, based on my experience as a driver, one of which was in the GTFX and less than pleasant.

As we all know, I crashed it a while ago. What happened was a I hit a patch of road that was far slicker than the rest in a corner, either due to oil or straying onto fresh paint, never did figure that one out fully. The back went into a slide on me, and I counter-steered to keep the car in check so it didn't go off into the oncoming traffic. After that, I'm not really sure what happened, because suddenly I had front end traction again, and the car simply grabbed, and chucked itself around 180 degrees the other way. Had it been a RWD platform at the time, the power output would have been going to the back where there was still no traction, allowing me to retain the counter-steer and point it back straight on the road, thanks to the steering wheels retaining the same level of force being applied to them throughout the entire maneuver, rather than having no grip, then suddenly grip with power at the same time.

Edit; There is, of course, one other thing that comes to mind - I probably just suck at driving, and it was probably avoidable for most seasoned drivers. Time in a paddock/track is on my to do list.
